Maximum heart rate is the highest rate your heart reaches during a truly maximal effort under a particular test. When that value has not been measured, an age equation can provide a rough starting point for exercise-zone calculations.

For a 40-year-old, that gives 180 beats per minute. The arithmetic is exact; the person-level prediction is not.
Where the equation came from
Tanaka, Monahan, and Seals combined data from 351 studies involving 18,712 participants, then cross-checked the relationship in a laboratory sample. Their 2001 report found the equation 208 − 0.7 × age and did not find a meaningful difference between men and women in the relationship they studied.
The equation improved the evidence behind a familiar shortcut, but age still explains only part of individual variation. In the HERITAGE Family Study analysis, both 220 − age and the Tanaka formula had standard errors of roughly 11–12 beats per minute overall, with differences across subgroups. That is far too wide to treat the estimate as your known maximum.
Estimated versus measured maximum
A properly obtained measured maximum can make zones more individual, but reaching maximal effort is demanding and may be inappropriate without suitable screening or supervision. The highest number ever seen on a wrist sensor is not automatically a valid maximum; sensor artifacts and brief spikes occur.
If you have a reliable measured value from an appropriate test, save its date, mode, conditions, and source. If not, keep the age estimate labeled as estimated and pair it with effort cues.
What the formula cannot decide
It cannot determine whether hard exercise is safe, account for medications that change heart rate, or identify a lactate or ventilatory threshold. It also cannot explain why your exercise heart rate is higher or lower on a particular day.
Use the number as a broad guide. If you are starting out, work near the easier end and build gradually. If heart rate and perceived effort disagree sharply, slow down and reassess the inputs. Seek qualified advice when symptoms, medication, or a condition makes generic zones uncertain.
