Grip strength measures the force produced while squeezing a dynamometer. It is quick and repeatable when the equipment and position are standardized, but it is not a complete measure of whole-body strength.
Why grip is useful
Large studies have collected grip values across adulthood, making age-reference comparisons possible. The Dodds et al. analysis pooled data from 12 British studies and described a rise to an early-adult peak, a period of maintenance, and decline from midlife onward. That curved pattern is why age inversion is not sensible across every age.
Grip also offers a domain distinct from cardiorespiratory fitness. In an eligible Advanced Assessment, it can add information that a walking or treadmill test does not capture.
What affects the reading
Dynamometer type, handle position, posture, elbow angle, wrist position, instruction, encouragement, hand dominance, number of trials, and the statistic recorded all matter. Pain or injury can make a reading unrepresentative or make testing inappropriate.
Body size also influences absolute force. Fitness Age Calculator normalizes the maximum recorded value by height squared for its adopted reference. That transformation helps match the scoring dataset; it does not turn the result into a universal measure of muscular health.
How the calculator uses it
Grip can contribute to the headline only when all protocol and coverage rules pass: an eligible age, a hydraulic dynamometer, seated position, elbow flexed, forearm neutral, adjusted handle, both hands tested, three trials per hand, no limiting pain, and measurement close enough in time to the cardiorespiratory test.
It does not join a Quick headline. Combining it with a low-confidence non-exercise estimate would make the final number look more precise than the evidence supports. When grip is missing or ineligible, the result explains why instead of substituting an average.
Improving strength is broader than improving grip
The US Physical Activity Guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activity for all major muscle groups on at least two days each week. A varied program can include pushing, pulling, squatting or standing, carrying, and trunk work adapted to ability. Training only the test movement is not the same as improving whole-body function.
