Fitness Age Calculator does not subtract a fixed number for each habit. It first estimates or accepts a fitness measurement, then compares that measurement with a versioned reference curve. The process is deliberately bounded and keeps uncertainty visible.

Step 1: obtain a cardiorespiratory value

Every headline result needs one eligible cardiorespiratory-fitness method.

The Quick Assessment uses the Jurca et al. non-exercise equation. It combines age, the published female or male equation term, BMI, resting heart rate, and one of five defined physical-activity categories. This is convenient but carries substantial prediction error, so Quick results stay low confidence.

The one-mile walk mode reproduces the equation developed by Kline and colleagues for healthy adults aged 30–69. It uses age, the published sex term, body mass, walk time, and immediate finish heart rate. A direct treadmill cardiopulmonary exercise test can supply a higher-quality value when its protocol and provenance are eligible.

Step 2: compare with an age reference

The resulting VO₂ value is compared with sex-specific treadmill measurements in the 2022 FRIEND reference study. The engine finds the age along the published median curve with a similar value. It interpolates between age anchors, but it never extrapolates beyond the supported 20–89 headline range.

The result also reports a broad percentile band rather than inventing an exact percentile. Treadmill, cycle, wearable, field-test, and non-exercise values are not silently treated as identical methods.

Step 3: add eligible grip context

For some Advanced Assessments, standardized grip strength can add a second domain. The reference is informed by the life-course norms reported by Dodds and colleagues. Grip must follow the specified seated dynamometer protocol, fall in the supported age branch, and be measured close enough in time to the cardiorespiratory test. Otherwise it remains explanatory context and does not change the headline.

Step 4: show uncertainty honestly

The engine carries each method’s measurement allowance through the same age curve to form a plausible range. It then assigns an ordinal confidence label from method quality, freshness, completeness, and protocol warnings. The headline is rounded to a whole year; hidden decimal places would imply accuracy the inputs do not support.

No missing value is replaced with zero or a population average. Historical results retain their model and reference versions, so a future recalculation cannot rewrite the past.
