Resting heart rate is the number of heartbeats per minute when you are awake, calm, and physically at rest. It is easy to collect, but a single reading can reflect far more than fitness.

The American Heart Association describes 60–100 beats per minute as a common resting range for most adults and notes that active people may be lower. That broad statement is not a personal threshold. Medication, illness, hydration, temperature, stress, hormones, sleep, caffeine, and measurement error can all shift the value.

How to measure it more consistently

Choose a repeatable condition. Morning, after a normal night of sleep and before getting out of bed or drinking caffeine, is practical for many people. Alternatively, sit quietly for at least five minutes and use the same position each time.

Measure with a validated device when available, or find the pulse at the wrist with two fingers rather than the thumb. Count long enough to reduce rounding error. If the rhythm feels irregular, a consumer count cannot explain why; seek appropriate advice if it is new, concerning, or accompanied by symptoms.

Record the date, time, position, device, recent illness, and anything unusual. A seven-day pattern is generally more useful than reacting to one morning.

How it enters the Quick Assessment

The Quick Fitness Age calculation uses resting heart rate inside the published Jurca non-exercise equation, together with age, body size, a reference-sex coefficient, and an activity category. The relationship is statistical. Entering a lower number moves that equation in a fitter direction, but it does not prove why the pulse is lower or that lowering it directly causes a younger result.

The calculator uses strict entry guards to catch likely unit or typing errors. Those guards are not diagnostic cut-offs. If your reading is outside the accepted product range, the safe response is to recheck technique and seek professional advice when appropriate—not to edit the number until the calculator accepts it.

Compare readings taken under similar conditions. A sustained pattern can help you notice adaptation or strain, while day-to-day movement may simply reflect ordinary variation. Do not chase an unusually low value or use it as clearance for hard exercise.
